For months we have been hearing rumors and whispers of a smaller and cheaper Switch, and today we have finally gotten the confirmation straight from the horse’s mouth. Say hello to the Nintendo Switch Lite

Without a doubt, the Switch has been a resounding success for Nintendo, and helped redeem itself after the not so impressive Wii U of 2012. However, for some gamers, the $300 price tag has been a bit too rich for them for a handheld console that lacks video playback support out of the box. Well the Switch Lite won’t be addressing the video playback issue, however it does address the price tag. The Switch Lite launches with a more palatable price of $200, though there are a few cuts that have been made in order to bring the price down and differentiate the two models.

What has changed with the Nintendo Switch Lite?

Well, for starters and maybe the most obvious changes are the fact that the Lite is smaller and lacks Joy-Con controllers. Instead the Lite has all of its buttons molded into the body and Nintendo have also changed the D-pad for one that you will recognize from some of their other consoles. Nintendo have also done away with the HD Rumble function, so don’t expect the finer feeling of individual ice cubes falling into a glass with the Switch Lite. Talking about gaming, the Switch Lite will support most Switch games, however, it will only work with games out of the Nintendo library that work in handheld mode.

Why does it only work with handheld mode games?

Well, this is a very easy question to answer. The Switch Lite does not have the ability to dock into the current TV Dock which transforms it into a home console. Added to this, there is no output to connect it to your TV at all, which might be a huge deal breaker for some. However, if you are looking for a pure handheld experience then the Lite might just be up your ally.
